My Favorites of 2024
5th annual DBA year end list
I listened to less new music this year than usual. I discovered less new artists than ever. I devoted the least amount of time to this blog than I have in any year since I started doing this in 2020. Hell, you only have to scroll back two posts to reach my lists from last year. Because of all this, I feel like my list holds less weight this year than it has in the past. Not in terms of importance (I know it’s not important), but I always think of my lists as something people can come to and know they’ll find something new or interesting from the year that they had never heard of before. And for some of the artists I’d feature, it felt like this was one of the only places they’d get proper recognition on an end of year list. There’s less opportunity for that here than in years past. In some ways I think that’s ok, but in other ways I want to get back to my roots with this in the coming year.

I honestly didn’t want to like, or even listen to this album as I never bought into the Black Country, New Road hype. The lyrics often came off as gross and off-putting to me, and frankly that’s still the case here. But for some reason it kind of works for me here on Geordie’s solo project? Somehow on these Zappa/bossanova infused instrumentals I can buy that these tales he’s spinning are a sophisticated takedown of modern masculinity, ego, artist, and celebrity instead of only hearing a whiny jerk wail into a mic. Open to listener interpretation if this is the project of a mad genius or a madman, because it’s certainly one or the other.

It’s wild that he’s dropped like four albums in a row now that make you think ‘this is the best album he’s ever made’ upon release. In that regard I think Call Me If You Get Lost might still have a slight edge for me, but I wouldn’t disagree with anyone calling this one his best work.

This top three could really move around for me depending on the day, but given the full year takeover that Charli had with this album and the just as well executed remix album, think it had to be this. Really feels like the album that she’s been building up to her whole career, and finally getting the reception and recognition at the same time was just the cherry on top.
